Monusco Commander Lt Gen Chender Prakhas conferred the UN medal on commander of the task force Lt Col Widiyanto at Bumi Cenderawasih Camp at Dungu in Congo on Monday, spokesman for the Indonesian military contingent 1st Lt Imam Mahmud said in an emailed statement to ANTARA on Tuesday.
Lt Gen Prakhas said the Indonesian military contingent made remarkable achievement during their six-month assignment in Congo.
Citing an example, he said the Indonesian contingent built a 147-km long road connecting Dungu to Faradje. "Not only did the Indonesian contingent build a road and bridges between Dungu and Faradje, but also they built a bridge of heart between the people of Congo and UN troops, Monusco in particular," he said.
He said members of the Indonesian engineering company (IEC) were also hospitable to the local people during their assignment.
The UN medal was concrete evidence of the IEC`s contribution during the six-month assignment in Congo as well as the TNI`s contribution to the creation of peace in Congo, he said.
On the occasion, he also called on military contingents from other countries to learn from the IEC in terms of hard work for the UN and Monusco.
Indonesia for the first time sent a military contingent known as Kontingen Garuda (Konga) to join UN peacekeeping mission in Egypt in 1956.
To date, 1,795 TNI personnel are joining various UN peacekeeping missions.
