Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian House Speaker Marzuki Alie met with his Iranian counterpart Ali Larijani at the parliament building here on Thursday.

The two countries` parliaments agreed to increase their cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, energy, infrastructure and tourism.

The two speakers expressed their commitment to playing a bigger role in their participation to settle problems such as in the Middle East, North Africa and Palestine.

"The two parliamentary leaders state that religious teachings must ensure unity and respect to the right of every nation to self-determination for the sake of their welfare and dignity," they said in a joint statement.

On the other hand, they also emphasized the importance of international support for the strengthening and development of democratization in those regions without foreign intervention, especially military intervention.

The two countries` parliaments urged the international community to end the isolation of the Gaza Strip that has lasted for more than four years and support the recognition of an independent Palestine with Al-Quds as its capital.

Regarding support for the Gaza Strip the two countries` parliaments urged a follow up of the decision of the PUIC (Parliamentary Union of the Organization of the Islamic Conference) ) meeting in Damascus, Syria, relating to plans to send parliamentary chief delegation from member countries to Gaza before this year`s Muslim fasting month of Ramadhan.

Marzuki said the two countries` parliaments also agreed to strengthen cooperation for strengthening democratization in Islamic countries considering the successes Indonesia and Iran had achieved in harmonizing Islam and Democracy to show that the two concepts were not contradictory to each other.(*)
