By using the lake, we hope to optimally absorb workers and reduce the number of migrant workers to Malaysia.
Jambi (ANTARA News) - The 4,200-hectare Lake Kerinci could absorb 10,000 workers if optimally used in the development of the fishery sector.

Head of the Kerinci fishery agency Gasdinul Gazam said here Wednesday the use of Lake Kerinci in the development of fishery was still very low, only 0.1 pct.

"The potential area which could be used in developing the sector including floating nets is not more than five percent of the width of the lake," he said.

The lake area which could be used for the development of fishery reaches 220 hectares, but its exploitation now has only reached two hectares, or 0.1 pct.

Right now there are 375 floating fish cages in Lake Kerinci, while the potential reaches 500 farmer groups, with each group having 20 members, absorbing 10,000 workers.

Gasdinul Gazam said with the cooperation of the relevant government institutions he will design regional regulations on the management of lakes.

Lake Kerinci which is also a popular tourist resort of Kerinci regency is also used by other agencies like the tourist and agricultural agencies, the water works, and others.

The use of the lake for various sectors needs a synergy of various agencies and the community, to avoid overlapping.

With special regard to fishery, Lake Kerinci is also a target or mina-politan open waters for 2012.

"By using the lake, we hope to optimally absorb workers and reduce the number of migrant workers to Malaysia," Gasdinul Gazam said. (M037)
