Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Agus Condro, the whistle blower in the case of traveler`s cheque bribery linked to the election of BI senior deputy governor Miranda Gultom in 2004 was sentenced to 15 months in jail on Thursday.

The Jakarta corruption court ruled the former politician of the Indonesia Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP) was guilty of corruption by receiving the cheques.

The sentence was only three months lighter than the demand from the prosecutor.

The prosecutor on June 1, 2011 demanded 1.5 years for Agus, which was lighter than the demand for other defendants in the case.

Agus Condro was also fined Rp50 million or three months more in prison if he fails to pay it.

Agus said he was disappointed by the verdict. He said he feared it would make people afraid to become a whistle blower.

Referring to Article 10 Clause 1 of the Law on Protection of Witness and Victims Agus said a whistle blower should not have been sentenced in view of what he had done.

The case has drawn much public attention because it has implicated a number of politicians.

One of the suspects in the case, Nunun Nurbaeti, the wife of a former national police deputy chief, is now at large abroad but the anti-graft body has asked Interpol to help locate her.(*)
