Bandung, West Java (ANTARA News) - The government will team up with the Indonesian Real Estate Association (REI) to develop 20 new urban areas in the country, Public Housing Minister Suharso Manoarfa said.

"We have reached an agreement with REI to develop 20 new urban areas across the country, including one in West Java," he said after opening a meeting of REI`s branch in West Java on Friday.

The minister said the planned development of 20 new urban areas was aimed at preventing the irregular development of residential areas. Under the concept of new urban areas, residential areas would be developed in such way that they would be environmentally friendly.

"In the initial phase, 10 new urban areas will be built in 10 provinces," he said.

The development of new urban areas would require 1,000-5,000 hectares of land, he said.

The concept of new urban areas had been discussed and would hopefully serve as one of the ideal breakthroughs in the development of residential areas, he said.

Meanwhile, REI Chairman Setyo Muharso confirmed the planned development of 20 new urban areas saying one of the new urban areas would be developed in West Java in the initial phase.

The nine other provinces will be Banten, East Java, Jakarta, North Sumatra, Riau, South Sumatra, East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan and Sout Sulawesi.

"We are still studying locations for the new urban areas to see if they accord with the plan, including prospects of the new urban areas," he said.

The locations would be adjusted to the master plan for the development of residential areas in general, he said citing an example, a new urban area in West Java would be developed in the eastern part of the province.

"It is likely an international airport will be built in Majalengka but this will be adjusted to the development of the area," he said.
