Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The ASEAN Foundation and the University of the Philippines Los Ba`os recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding to affirm its commitment to raise greater awareness of ASEAN and to promote human resources development in the region.

Dr. Makarim Wibisono, ASEAN Foundation Executive Director and Dr. Luis Rey Velasco, Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Los Ba`os (UPLB) signed the MOU, according to a press statement posted on the official website of the Jakarta-based ASEAN Foundation here Saturday.

One joint undertaking is a regional post-graduate scholarship program for ASEAN nationals, which is implemented together with Thabyay Education Network, a Thailand-registered foundation providing higher education services to support human development, peace and reconciliation in Southeast Asia.

The program, which is under Phase 2 of the ASEAN Foundation Post-Graduate Scholarship Program, will provide scholarships for deserving nationals of Lao PDR, Cambodia and Myanmar to take up graduate studies in UP Los Ba`os.

The ASEAN Foundation and UPLB also agreed to further develop capacity-building projects and other activities that will address key regional issues, benefit ASEAN stakeholders and eventually contribute to building the ASEAN Community.

This partnership is in line with the mandate of the ASEAN Foundation to engage and collaborate with the private sector to support the ASEAN community-building by promoting greater awareness of the ASEAN identity, people to people interaction and close collaboration among the business sector, civil society, academia and other stakeholders of ASEAN.

Established in 1909, UPLB is a constituent unit of the University of the Philippines, the national university of the Philippines and is considered as the leading academic institution in Southeast Asia dedicated to advancing knowledge and educating students in science, technology, agriculture, forestry, veterinary medicine and other areas of studies.(*)
