Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputy chief Bibit Samat Riyanto said here on Thursday, Nazaruddin was named a suspect based on an article on the receipt of a bribe by state apparatus in line with Law Number 31 of 1999 on corruption eradication.
Earlier, the KPK had summoned Nazaruddin twice as witness in the case of Mindo Rosalina Manulang, his former employee in PT Anak Negeri, but he never responded or showed up.
Nazaruddin had also been summoned to stand as a witness in the case of Wafid Muharam, the sports minister`s secretary, and a corruption case at the ministry of education but he also ignored the calls.
Nazaruddin left Indonesia for Singapore on May 23, 2011 a day before the KPK issued a travel ban on him.
Busyro Muqoddas said the decision to give the new status to Nazaruddin was made after various kinds of evidence had been scrutinized.
He said the KPK was now seeking the best way of getting Nazaruddin returned to Indonesia from Singapore. He said he hoped the government could make a G-to-G approach to Singapore for the purpose.(*)
