Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia and Malaysia have agreed to enhance military cooperation, particularly in intensifying border security.

The agreement was reached at a meeting between National Defence Forces (TNI) Chief Admiral Agus Suhartono and his Malaysian counterpart General Tan Sri Dato` Sri Zulkifeli bin Mohd Zin here on Tuesday.

The two military leaders expressed hope that they could continue and enhance cooperation between the two armed forces in all fields particularly border security.

Admiral Agus Suhartono said the meeting served as an important momentum for both nations to turn ASEAN into a more conducive region under comprehensive partnership as well as ASEAN spirit and solidarity.

"This will have a strategic effect on the creation of enhanced relations and cooperation between Malaysia and Indonesia, the two armed forces in particular," he said.

He expressed hope that the longstanding close cooperation between the two armed forces would lay a firm basis for the expansion of more concrete and useful cooperation.

The defence communities and armed forces of the two countries have routinely held Malindo General Border Committee (GBC) meetings since 1972. Even the two armed forces also have organized meetings of the Malindo High Level Committee (HLC) forum since 2006 to share experience in carrying out various useful activities.(*)
