Biak, Papua (ANTARA News) - Biak Numfor district`s education office in cooperation with Unicef is​ conducting a public consultation on the region`s draft strategic education plan for 2009-2014 to collect inputs from local stakeholders.

Kamaruddin, secretary of the district`s education office, said here Tuesday, the draft strategic education plan was the brainchild of local education stakeholders of diverse backgrounds.

"The draft strategic education plan of Biak Numfor district needs to be the subject of a public consultation in which it can be criticized or discussed together so that it can be improved or refined before it is formally adopted," Kamaruddin said.

After the plan was formally adopted, it should continue to be overseen by the public so that the various programs and strategies contained in it would be implemented properly in order to improve the quality of eduction and the people`s access to educational services.

"The implementation of the strategic education plan should remain subject to supervision by the stakeholders and be done with a commitment to the targets and objectives contained in the strategic plan," Kamaruddin said.

Meanwhile, head of Unicef for education programs and HIV/AIDS ​​in Papua and West Papua, Neven expressed gratitude for the involvement of the stakeholders in the activities of the public consultation on Biak Numfor district`s strategic education plan.

Implementation of the strategic plan was expected to increase the people`s access to education, improve the quality of education and meet Papua`s needs in the educational field.

"I hope that through the public consultation the various stakeholders can complement each other so that the strategic education plan can serve the common good," Neven said.

The public consultation was attended by 60 participants from educational institutions, NGOs, media, high school students, principals, teachers, education officials and the People`s Representative Council of Biak.
