The Solo Meeting is an important point to push a more effective environmental institution, Dana A Kartakusuma, the environmental affairs ministry`s expert staff in charge of sustainable development and economy, said here on Wednesday.
"The Solo Meeting is the initiative of Indonesia and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA). Through this initiative, it is expected that the reform process of sustainable development and the environment at the global level will start," Dana said.
Environmental Affairs Minister Gusti Muhammad Hatta will officially kick off the meeting which will be attended by among others policy makers, researchers, experts, and representatives of the United Nations bodies, regional and international organizations engaged in sustainable development programs.
Some 250 people representing 80 countries, UN bodies, 21 major groups and 17 NGOs, have confirmed their participation in the dialog.
The outcome of this dialogue will contribute to preparations for the Rio+20 Conference in December 2011.
The purpose of this dialogue is to have a frank and open high-level discussions on the options for strengthening the institutional framework for sustainable development, with a view to progress towards formulating concrete proposals which could be taken up for consideration and possible adoption at Rio+20.
The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), which will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 2012, will assess the progress in sustainable development since the adoption of Agenda 21 in 1992 and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation in 2002.
The Conference will also consider two important themes, namely a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication, and the institutional framework for sustainable development.
