"Intervention by businessmen and political forces in law enforcement is the main cause of failures in eradicating corruption," Bambang Soesatyo who is a Golkar Party politician, said.Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Political forces and businessmen should stop co-opting the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) so that it would be able to increase its roles in fighting corruption, a legislator said.
"The urgent thing to do now regarding the KPK is not dissolving it but businesses and political forces must stop intervening it," Bambang Soesatyo, member of the House of Representatives (DPR)`s Commission III on legal affairs, said here on Sunday.
He said that the idea to disband the anti-graft body was misleading. House Speaker Marzuki Alie recently raised the idea that the KPK should be disbanded if it was no longer effective and no longer trusted and a qualified figure to lead it.
"Intervention by businessmen and political forces in law enforcement is the main cause of failures in eradicating corruption," Bambang Soesatyo who is a Golkar Party politician, said.
Therefore, he has repeatedly reminded that political forces and businessmen should stop co-opting the KPK if it was expected to become strong and independent in fighting corruption.
On the occasion, Bambang offered a solution to make the KPK remain strong and independent, namely the government and the DPR should review the recruitment mechanism of the anti-graft body`s leadership.
"The deciding role factor of the DPR and the government is now being felt awkward and illogical," he said adding that that was because the government still had big problems relating corruption.
"The DPR also has almost the same problem, in the sense that the government and the House so far are part of the corruption problem," he said.
Therefore, Bambang questioned the government`s competent to propose and recommend a figure to lead the anti-corruption body.
The same was also true for the House`s competence in conducting a fit-and-proper test and endorse a KPK leader, he said.(*)
