Melbourne (ANTARA News/AAP-OANA) - A man is in hospital with a broken back after he was dragged 10 metres by a train in Sydney`s west.

The 28-year-old man appeared to be under the influence of alcohol when he arrived at Marayong Station late on Thursday night, a police spokesman told AAP.

He later stumbled and fell on to the tracks, then spent at least half an hour trying to climb back on to the platform.

He was hit by a train about 12.30am (AEST Friday), CCTV footage showed.

"He was found lying between the train and the platform. He was conscious, but obviously in pain," the police spokesman said.

The man was freed and taken to Westmead Hospital with injuries that included a fractured spine, wrist and hip, as well as a lacerated spleen.

"Alcohol appears to have been a factor," the spokesman said.

A spokeswoman for Westmead Hospital said the man was in a "stable" condition on Friday morning.
