Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Mahfud MD took an oath as a Constitutional Court (MK) chairman here on Monday after he was reelected in a vote recently.

Mahfud was reelected to be an MK chairman until 2014 in a vote by nine MK council members on August 18, 2011. He won five votes beating Harjono who won two votes, Hamdan Zoelva with one vote and one absentee.

"The vote has gone in a business as usual atmosphere without a media fanfare that compared the capability and acceptability of MK judges," he said in his speech at the oath taking ceremony.

The ceremony was attended by MK judges and state institution leaders such as the chairman of the People`s Consultative Assembly (MPR), Taufik Kiemas, Supreme Court chairman Harifin A Tumpa, Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chief Busyro Muqoddas, Judicial Commission chairman Eman Suparman, General Elections Commission (KPU) chairman Hafiz Anshary, Defense Forces (TNI) commander Admiral Agus Suhartono and National Police deputy chief Nanan Sukarna.

All MK judges have a right to elect and to be elected but four judges had declared not to use their right to be elected namely Anwar Usman, Akil Mochtar, Muhammad Alim and Maria Farida Indrati.

Mahfud MD was first elected as MK chairman in 2008 replacing Jimly Asshiddiqie. He has earned fame following his law enforcement breakthroughs such as his decision to play the tape of conversations between bribery suspect Anggodo and several law enforcement officials. (*)
