Pekalongan, Central Java (ANTARA News) - Private cars and motorcycles carrying holiday makers were on Thursday seen passing through Java Island`s northern coastal highway in Pekalongan, Central Java, in increasing numbers.

The denser-than-usual traffic caused congestions at certain points in Pekalongan such as on Jalan Wiradesa, Grogolan and Sudirman and at the Batang market.

Pekalongan resort police chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Hanif said in anticipation of traffic jams and possible criminal activity he had set up four security posts whose personnel were ready to deal with any problem arising during the current holiday travel season.

He said he had also asked his men to use motorbikes instead of cars when carrying out their duties. "By using motorbikes they help reduce traffic density," he said.

He said he had also prohibited trucks to pass the northern coastal roads in the region four days ahead of Idul Fitri that falls on August 30, especially those carrying basic necessaries to help smooth traffic.

"We will ensure the security of holiday travelers by stationing personnel in areas prone to crime. However, we also appeal to travelers to be careful with strangers they meet during their journeys," he said.
