Bandung, W.Java (ANTARA News) - An Indonesian student Arifa Abdullah Rakhmana received an award in the 63rd Annual Congress of The Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Osaka University, Japan, on 29-30 August.

Arifa is a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine, Bandung Islamic University (Unisba) and was granted an award at the International Session Award for Best Presentation.

She did not think she would be granted the award, because all the participants in the competition were world-class medical specialists, Arifa said here Friday.

"There were only two young doctors at the competition, the representative of Indonesia, my friend Firla Rachmina and I," Arifa noted.

Arifa said she could be involved in the congress of obstetric and gynecological diseases by an invitation from her thesis supervisor, dr.Wawang Setiawan.

In 2010, Arifa made a research thesis on The Relationship Between Maternal Characteristics of Education, Employment, Age, Varieties and Pregnancy, With Preclamation Weight (high blood pressure in pregnant women)" at Mother and Child Hospital Astana Anyar in 2009.

"The result of my research had prompted doctor Wawang to attend the congress in Japan. After going through the selection phase, the research was selected to be presented," she explained.

Together with 15 participants from Taiwan, China, South Korea and Japan, as the representative of Indonesia Arifa competed in presenting her research results.

"I was the only one young doctor. In fact, the participant from China is a professor, so until now I still do not believe it," Arifa added.

In the international congress presentation there were two competitions, namely the oral presentation and poster presentation,

"My research included to the oral presentation," she continued.

In the presentation Arifa explained that the mortality rate due to high blood pressure in pregnant women in Indonesia is still high. In fact, it remains as one of the highest causes of maternal mortality in Indonesia.

"The issue of age and work become the factors causing high blood for pregnant women. From the research, I found that mothers who do not work have a higher risk of high blood pressure. As for the vulnerable age factor is for women under age 20 and above 35 years," Arifa explained.

Because of the accomplishments, Arifa immediately get several offers for scholarships to continue her studies. In fact, there is also a sponsorship to continue her research.(*)
