A party that considers itself as being the best is actually just moving to the verge of its political demise,"
Pontianak, West Kalimantan (ANTARA News) - The general chairman of the ruling Democrat Party, Anas Urbaningrum, said there was no logical reason for political parties to fight with each other.

"What is permissible is competition to give the best to the nation. That is the facility provided by democracy," Anas said when opening the second regional meeting of the Democrat Party`s West Kalimantan chapter here on Monday.

He said through competition each party must give its best for the people.

"It is the people who will determine which is the best party. which party they can rely on to get their aspirations fulfilled," he said.

The Democrat Party he said never sees other political parties as enemies but as potentials for the progress of Indonesia "both the senior and the new ones."

Anas admitted that the Democrat Party which was set up only 10 years ago could still be categorized as very young in historical terms.

Therefore he said the Democrat Party would always learn the good things from other more senior parties.

He said from the beginning he had always reaffirmed that the Democrat Party must have courage to correct and improve itself towards perfection.

"A party that considers itself as being the best is actually just moving to the verge of its political demise," he said.

Anas said he believed it would be better for a party to improve itself rather than become a party that would be corrected by history.

The Democrat Party had surprisingly won the country`s general elections twice beating older parties such as the Golkar Party, the Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDIP) and the United Development Party. Indonesia is to hold its next general elections in 2014. (*)
