"In 2010, the number of occupational accidents in Indonesia was recorded at 98,000 cases. Some 1,200 of the total killed the victims," Director General of Manpower Supervision Development of the Ministry of Manpower, Muji Handaya said here on Thursday.
The director general made the remarks at a two-day Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) workshop on National Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) held here on October 12-13 2011.
If compared with the rate of occupational accidents in Denmark and Germany, the number of occupational accident in Indonesia is smaller than those in the two countries which had 100,000 cases, yet the number of workers who died is smaller, namely about 500.
The meeting which was attended by 24 countries from Asia and Europe issued a four point recommendation.
It agreed to build a base for various information on occupational health and safety and to strengthen cooperation in the implementation of the K3 principles.
Cooperation on a regional and international basis in the research field and capacity building must also be carried out.
The fourth point called for awareness for promotion that a good implementation of K3 would provide protection and better welfare for workers and would have good impact on the company`s production.
In the meantime, Commissioner of Workplace Safety and Health, Ministry of Manpower of Singapore, Ho Siong Hin said the meeting had built better understanding among Asem members in identifying and increasing cooperation in the implementation of K3.
"Next year, the same meeting will be held in Singapore. We hope we can continue the results that have been achieved at this meeting," he said.(*)
