United Nations (ANTARA News/AFP) - The UN Security Council will vote Friday on a resolution condemning the worsening violence in Yemen and calling on President Ali Abdallah Saleh to stand down, diplomats said Thursday.

The proposed resolution, which has the backing of all five permanent members of the Security Council, would give strong backing to a Gulf Cooperation Council peace plan under which Saleh would hand over power.

Saleh has so far refused to commit to the plan proposed by the six Gulf states.

The resolution has been drawn up by Britain with its European allies on the council. The vote will be held on Friday at 3:00 pm (1900 GMT), France`s UN mission said on its Twitter account.

The resolution calls for the "immediate signing" by Saleh of the GCC plan, condemns the use of violence against demonstrators and calls for a ceasefire and a commission of investigation into the killing of innocent demonstrators.

Demonstrations against Saleh started in January but the council has so far agreed only two statements, which have lesser diplomatic weight than a resolution. (*)
