United Nations (ANTARA News) - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday condemned a spike in rocket attacks in the Gaza Strip after the region`s worst day of violence in months killed an Israeli and nine Palestinians.

An Israeli air strike Sunday killed a Gaza militant just hours after Islamic Jihad vowed to observe an Egyptian-brokered truce. The Israeli military said it had fired at "a terrorist squad that was preparing to fire rockets at Israel."

"The secretary general has been following with deep concern the recent escalation of violence and bloodshed in Southern Israel and Gaza," said UN spokesman Martin Nesirky in the wake of the weekend`s surge in violence.

"He condemns rocket fire from Gaza, which has killed an Israeli civilian."

The Israeli ambassador to the United Nations Ron Prosor had earlier hit out at Ban for failing to condemn Palestinian rocket attacks.(*)
