New York (ANTARA) – As a country consisting of more than 17,000 islands, the efforts to provide health insurance for all populations, became Indonesia's focus through the implementation of the National Health Insurance Program (JKN) in 2014. In a span of less than 10 years, more than 94% of Indonesia's population has registered for the JKN Program. This makes Indonesia the fastest country to progress towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC), outperforming European countries that on average take decades to guarantee their population.

"As of September 15, 2023, the number of people who have received JKN Program protection has reached 263 million people or 94.23% of the total population of Indonesia. Currently, the challenge is how to provide health services for all participants," said President Director of BPJS Health, Ghufron Mukti who appeared as a representative of Indonesia at the United Nations High-level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage in New York, Thursday (21/09).

Ghufron also explained about the health services of the JKN Program which includes promotive, preventive, curative, and rehabilitative health services. To support the implementation of the JKN Program, BPJS Kesehatan currently collaborates with a total of 23,592 First Level Health Facilities (FKTP) such as Puskesmas, Clinics, Individual general practitioners, and 3,004 Advanced Level Referral Health Facilities (FKRTL) such as hospitals and clinics with comprehensive health services.

Of this figure, there are 63% or 17,189 privately owned health facilities that are partners of BPJS Kesehatan. Ghufron also emphasized that in order for JKN participants to get quality services, BPJS Kesehatan only collaborates with health service providers who pass the credentialing and recredentialing selection. To serve basic health services to remote areas, several floating hospitals are also contracted by BPJS Kesehatan.

"We are also committed to presenting a breakthrough in collaboration with Mobile Hospitals, with the hope of providing convenience in opening access to services for JKN participants. In the future, inter-regional services will be a major step in serving remote areas that previously faced difficulties in accessing hospital care," said Ghufron, who is currently the chairman of the 160-member TC Health International Social Security Association (ISSA).

Ghufron also explained that the utilization of health services by JKN participants is increasing from year to year. In 2022, it was recorded that the total utilization of health services reached 502.9 million, meaning that there were 1.4 million utilization of services every day. According to Ghufron, the JKN Program emphasizes preventive promotion efforts because it is the backbone of the national health system.

"Therefore, several programs to improve promotion and prevention include health checking, disease management programs, and teleconsultation. BPJS Kesehatan also developed an information system to create an application called i-Care JKN, a program designed so that health workers can coordinate with each other, analyze medical data, monitor patients comprehensively, and determine further effective treatment," he explained.

The High-Level Meeting was also attended by representatives of about 150 countries in the world, ranging from Switzerland, Japan, Britain, Thailand, Egypt, Brazil, South Africa, France, China, Korea, Finland, New Zealand, and so on.
