The exercise was designed to bring together Indonesia`s humanitarian community in a highly realistic disaster scenario in which the government and the UN cluster systems trigger the kind of food, water, shelter and protection responses that would be activated in a large-scale emergency, the WFP said in a news release obtained here Friday.
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) and the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) are amongst the participating ministries.
"This simulation will enable emergency responders to build partnerships, strengthen communications systems and practice coordinating the provision of resources, in a high pressure, time-sensitive environment," Fatchul Hadi, secretary to the BNPB chief, said in his remarks opening the exercise.
The simulation uses role-playing in an earthquake-triggered tsunami scenario, during which participants respond to emails and phone calls, receive news releases and attend meetings.
Participants develop strategies and coordinate life-saving aid based on their agency policies and contingency plans, focusing specifically on emergency response and early recovery.
