Jakarta (ANTARA News) - ASEAN-UN cooperation was elevated to new heights at the fourth ASEAN-UN Summit in Nusa Dua, Bali, Saturday, when the Secretary-General of ASEAN`s proposal of closer cooperation between the ASEAN Secretariat and the Secretariat of the UN was endorsed by the Chair of ASEAN, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak also suggested that engagement between the two Secretariats should be held more regularly, the Jakarta-based ASEAN Secretariat said in a press statement here on Sunday.

"Malaysia supports international dialogue and cooperation to achieve local peace and security", he said.

ASEAN Secretary General Dr Surin Pitsuwan said, "The first ASEAN-UN Summit was held in Bangkok in 2000. Now at the fourth Summit, we are moving our cooperation to a higher plain. A "comprehensive" cooperation will require the two Secretariats to intensify our efforts, widen our cooperation and collaborate more on common challenges relevant to our expanding mandates."

The meeting also adopted the Joint Declaration on Comprehensive Partnership between ASEAN and the United Nations.

ASEAN-UN cooperation currently covers a wide range of areas including finance, climate change, food and energy security, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), disaster management, peace and security, and human rights.

President Yudhoyono on behalf of Indonesian people received "Global Champion of Disaster Risk Reduction" award from the United Nations.

"On behalf of Indonesian people, I am very honored to receive this award," President Yudhoyono said when the award was presented to him by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon in a ceremony at Bali International Convention Center (BICC) in Nusa Dua, Bali, Saturday.(*)
