Batam (ANTARA News) - Police in Batam, Riau Islands, have arrested 17 workers as suspected provocateurs following violent workers` demonstrations in Batam city.

Operations chief of the Barelang (Batam Rempang Galang) city police resort Commissioner M Sholeh said here on Friday they would be questioned at the police station.

Five of them were caught in the Panasonic complex in the Sincom Industrial Zone in Batam city and others outside it and on the streets.

Police discovered a slingshot carried by Ptrs who was arrested on near Batam City Grand Mosque. Ptrs said he is one of the workers of Tanjunguncang shipbuilding company.

Another suspect caught by the police, DEP, meanwhile denied that he had spread text messages calling for creating riots in Batam.

DEP, a worker of PT Nanindah Tanjunguncang, was caught at the Panasonic complex in the Sincom Industrial Zone.

Situation in the industrial zone in Batam looked tense on Friday morning with TNI (military) members being seen on guard at the gate of the Batamindo Industrial Zone and Panbil in Mukakuning.

At 11am hundreds of female workers of PT Nutune in Batamindo were seen walking out of the company orderly. Some workers said they were ordered to go home as workers planned to stage a protest again.

Workers have been demonstrating since Wednesday demanding the city mayor to increase their minimum pay standard to Rp1.76 million as of 2012.
