The epicenter of the quake which struck at 04.00 a.m. was in the sea 325 km southwest of Simeulue district, Aceh province, or 1,785 km northwest of Jakarta at a depth of 59 km, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said.
The quake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, it said.
An 8.9 magnitude undersea quake that unleashed a devastating tsunami shook part of Aceh on December 26, 2004, leaving more than 200 thousand people dead. (*)
