Lashkar Gah, Afghanistan (ANTARA News/Xinhua-0ANA) - Twelve militants and two policemen were killed Thursday in a clash following a Taliban attack on a police checkpoint in south Afghanistan`s Helmand province, a spokesman for the provincial government said.

"A group of armed militants stormed a police checkpoint in at around 0400 Thursday local time in Jazi area of Naw Zad district but the Afghan National Police repelled the attack," spokesman Daud Ahmadi told Xinhua.

The clash triggered a gunfight that lasted for four hours. As a result 12 armed militants including their commander Mullah Abdul Baqi were killed.

He said the militants used small rifle and rocket propelled grenades to attack the security checkpoint, adding two policemen were also killed and three others were injured in the fighting.

The Taliban has yet to make comments.
