Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked politicians in Aceh to exercise restraint to help ensure the smooth implementation of democracy in the region.

"I appeal to all politicians not to face off but exercise restraint," he said at a government working meeting here on Thursday.

He said politicians must not sacrifice democracy for the political interest of their groups.

He also called on all parties in Aceh to prioritize peaceful efforts in dealing with problems.

"Maintain the regional elections in Aceh so that they will run safely, fairly and democratically," he said.

Aceh is scheduled to hold regional elections next month.

With regard to Papua President Yudhoyono said the government would continue putting forward welfare approach to deal with problems there while at the same time assuring the rule of law and state sovereignty without necessarily violating human rights.

He said the government was also committed to using the budget that remains to be used to develop transportation facilities in Papua and its surrounding regions. (*)
