New Delhi (ANTARA News/Xinhua-0ANA) - At least one person was killed and three others injured in a powerful explosion Sunday evening outside the residence of a local politician in the northeast Indian state of Manipur, said police.

This is the third attack of this kind in the capital of Manipur, Imphal, in the past two weeks, said police.

A police spokesperson told the media that the explosion took place outside the residence of Congress party candidate I. Hemochandra Singh on the outskirts of Imphal at around 18:15 p.m. local time.

The attacker used an improvised explosive device that went off, killing one by-stander and injuring three pedestrians.

Three people were injured in a grenade attack on Jan. 10 when unidentified militants lobbed a grenade outside the residence of another politician. On Jan. 6, a ruling Congress party election office came under a grenade attack, but no one was injured.

Manipur is due to hold elections to its 60-member legislative house on Jan. 28.

Some local militant groups have called for a ban on all election meetings and campaigning by the Congress candidates in the state.
