"There must be a jihad against narcotics. Efforts have not been serious so far. Indeed, achievements have been made but have not been maximal," NU chief Said Aqil Siraj said at his office here on Tuesday referring to the fact that narcotic drugs are still sold in the market and consumed by some people.
His statement came following a car incident in Gambir, Central Jakarta, on Sunday when a van hit nine people to death. The driver of the car is believed to have driven under the influence of drugs.
"This proves that narcotic users do not only hurt themselves but also others," he said.
He said to eradicate narcotics distribution a strict law is needed besides strong discipline of the law enforcers and public participation.
"In Malaysia the police are very discipline and the law is harsh. In Indonesia there are still loopholes," he said.
He said the loopholes must be wiped out or minimally reduced.
Said Aqil said NU supports death penalty for producers and traffickers as part of efforts to fight narcotics.
"Narcotics disrupt orderliness. In certain cases death penalty must be implemented," he said.(*)
