The protestors threw stones at the embassy and broke its window glass. The embassy said in a statement that the attackers were saboteurs who belonged to the Syrian National Council, an overseas opposition group.
According to the monitoring cameras, the protestors stormed the embassy and destroyed its wall and gates. They also robbed some equipment, Egypt`s Al-Ahram website quoted the statement as saying.
The Egyptian security forces drove the protestors out of the embassy.
The embassy said the saboteurs received funds from Gulf states against Syria.
Syrian Ambassador to Egypt Yousef Ahmed called on the Egyptian authorities to bear the responsibility of protecting the diplomatic mission.
Meanwhile, violence has dramatically escalated over the past three days in Syria, especially in the areas of Homs, Idlib, and Hama, head of the AL observer mission in Syria, Moustafa al-Dabi, said Friday.
Al-Dabi urged an immediate end to the violence to protect the Syrian people.
AL Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Al-Thani will go to the United Nations on Saturday to seek support for the new Arab initiative reached at an AL meeting of foreign minsters on Sunday.
