Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Social Affairs Minister Salim Segaf Al Jufri handed Rp1.45 billion for the empowerment of poor people in Sukoharjo district, Java province, on Sunday.

The assistance was in the form of Productive Economic Business Stimulant (UEP) scheme for 30 joint business groups (Kube) or about 300 families.

Each group obtained Rp30 million. The total Kube assistance was worth Rp900 million.

Apart from that the aid was also provided for the rehabilitation of local people`s houses for 50 families. Each family obtained RP10 million.

The poverty elimination program is being carried out with a social empowerment approach in the Kube groups.

The social affairs ministry has set aside Rp750 billion for poverty eradication program in 2012, about 57 percent designed for the region and the remaining ones for Jakarta.

For the Kube program, the government has set aside Rp133 billion for those in city and Rp191 billion for villages.

The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) data in 2011 indicated that the number of poor people in Indonesia reached 32.02 million or about 13.33 percent of the total population.

Of the 32.02 million, about 11.5 percent live in cities and 18.97 percent in villages.
