"The development of the information technology system is designed to overcome the congestion of ships, particularly foreign-registered ships at the port," Pelindo President Director RJ Lino said on the sidelines of a discussion on state enterprises here on Wednesday.
He hoped the system could be installed in mid-2012 at the latest.
The system will enable port officers to get real-time information on ship traffic so congestion can be minimized and collisions can be avoided, he said.
He added that Pelindo II will notify port service users of the plan to install the system and hoped they could adapt to it within six months.
Data shows that the flow of containers at the port reached 5.47 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit) at the end of last year, outstripping the maximum capacity of 5 million TEUs.
The figure was recorded at 3.7 million TEUs in 2009 and 4.7 million TEUs in 2010.
In view of that, the company must make breakthroughs to reduce the waiting time of ships from six to three days, he said.
Besides Tajung Priok port, Pelindo II is also planning to install a similar system at Palembang, Pontianak and Jambi ports starting in 2013, he said.
Pelindo II posted a net profit of Rp1.29 trillion in 2011 compared to Rp1.25 trillion one year ago.
Its income rose 31.5 percent to Rp3.96 trillion in 2011 from Rp3.01 trillion in 2010.
