The quake which struck at 07.28 p.m. was centered 45 km northeast of the district bordering Timor Leste at a depth of 313 km, chief of the Ambon geophysics station Benny Sipolo said on Thursday night.
Maluku province, particularly Maluku Tenggara Barat district was last hit by a 5.4-magnitude quake on March 5, 2012.
Maluku is one of quake-and tsunami-prone regions in Indonesia because it lies at the meeting point of three major tectonic plates, namely Pacific, Indo Australia and Eurasia. (*)
