"We are making an effort to increase the number of gas stations," he said here on Tuesday.
The plan to build more gas stations was aimed at reducing fuel oil consumption so that the country would no longer be affected by global crude price hike, he said.
Boediono said a number of public transport vehicles such as Trans Jakarta buses and three-wheeled motorized taxis (bajaj) had been using gas since a few years ago under an oil-to-gas conversion program.
Likewise, almost all households in the country had been using gas for cooking, he said.
"We have implemented a fuel-to-gas conversion program in stages. The program will end in 2014 but we hope it can be continued in the ensuing years," he said.
He said gas pipelines would be built in a number of cities in the country to supply gas directly to households so that they would no longer use gas cylinders.
As part of the fuel-to-gas conversion program, the government would also provide free converter kits to public transport vehicles and subsidize converter kits for private cars, he said.
