Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Demonstrators, mostly students and laborers, pulled down the fence at the main gate of the parliament building while protesting the government`s plan to raise fuel oil prices, here on Friday.

They also smashed fences on either side of the main gate and entered the grounds in front of the parliament building as security officers formed a barricade.

Further, two units of technical vehicles, including water cannons and cars, were also placed on alert.

As of this afternoon, demonstrators were still on the premises, though none had entered the parliament building.

Also, at 6 pm protesters were waiting for the results of the plenary meeting at the House of Representatives (DPR) to decide whether it would approve the government`s proposal to raise fuel oil prices on April 1.

The government is planning to hike prices of subsidized fuel oil on April 1 and has submitted two options to the DPR. In the first proposal, the government seeks to raise the price of subsidized premium gasoline from Rp4,500 to Rp6,000 per liter, and diesel oil from Rp4,500 to Rp6,000 per liter.
