Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Former communication and informatics minister Syamsul Muarif passed away at Singapore`s General Hospital, Tuesday, at 8:25 a.m.

Former vice president M Jusuf Kalla is currently in Singapore to accompany the body of Syamsul on the return to Jakarta, Egy Massadiah, a spokesman of Jusuf Kalla, said here Tuesday.

Syamsul`s body will be laid at Halim Perdana Kusuma air force base in eastern Jakarta before being taken to Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, Syamsul`s hometown, for the funeral.

"His colleagues are expected to pay their last respect at Halim (Perdana Kusuma)," Egy said.

Syamsul Muarif was born in Kandangan, Hulu Sungai Selatan, South Kalimantan Province, on December 8, 1948.

He became communication and informatics minister in the Gotong Royong cabinet (2000-2004).

From 1999 to 2001, he was chairman of the Golkar Party faction and chairman of SOKSI (Indonesian self-reliant workers organization) from 2005-2010.(*)
