Copenhagen (ANTARA News) - Buy a house before May 1 and get a new car for free: an estate agency is hoping to attract buyers to Denmark`s slumping housing market with the unusually generous offer.

The deal applies to homes in a posh new housing estate in a suburb north of Copenhagen where sales have been slow, the real estate agent`s marketing director, Dorte Andersen, told AFP on Tuesday.

The small, urban car is valued at around 100,000 kroner (13,500 euros, 18,000 dollars), which is given away for free to those who buy a house in the estate, where prices start at 2.5 million kroner (336,000 euros, 447,000 dollars), Andersen said.

Cars are heavily taxed in Denmark and are typically the second-biggest expense for households after housing.

Families with children who would like to move from Copenhagen to the suburbs are often dissuaded by the additional and inevitable cost of having to buy a car, Andersen said.

"If we really have to offer people a better deal, it would be better to offer them a lower price on their house" at a time when banks are setting tougher mortgage conditions, the head of a consumer organisation, Rasmus Kjeldahl, told local daily Frederiksborg Amts Avis.
