Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and Taiwan`s Chung-Hua Institute on Economic Research (CIER) are conducting joint research on economy to find cooperation potentials for beneficial cooperation between the two countries.

"The relations between Indonesia and Taiwan are not only confined to formal diplomatic relations in the field of politics but have developed to non-diplomatic fields as well especially in the fields of economy, trade, agriculture and tourism," LIPI`s chief Prof. Syamsuddin Haris said here on Wednesday.

He hoped the research cooperation in the field of economy would increase further cooperation between the two countries.

The research cooperation that would last for about nine months is the continuation of the first research cooperation program in 2011 which was focused on agriculture, automotive, electronics and human resources.

This time the focus will be on more formal bilateral economic cooperation opportunities, LIPI political researcher Dr Adriana Elisabeth said.

"In 2011 we tried to map out sectors that are the two countries` priorities. This time we would try to see possibilities for more formal economic cooperation. We will get a lot of benefit from economic cooperation with Taiwan," she said.

Adriana who is also the chief of the research team said she hoped the government could produce a policy for better economic activities following the cooperation.

"The results of the research later must be used by the government as the basis for making policies. So far policies have rarely been made based upon research results," she said.

Taiwanese representative to Indonesia Andrew Hsia meanwhile said he hoped following the research further negotiations would be done by the Indonesian government to deepen economic cooperation between the two countries.

"We hope the Indonesian government would use the results of the research for booting mutually beneficial cooperation between Indonesia and Taiwan," he said.

He said deeper economic cooperation between Indonesia and Taiwan would benefit peoples of the two countries.
