According to the prosecutor Bambang Suharyadi, Umar Patek alias Abdul Ghoni alias Abu Syeikh alias Umar Arab is charged with six counts of violating a number of articles under the criminal and terrorism laws.
First, Umar Patek is suspected to have smuggled in firearms from the Philippines. Second, he is charged for his alleged role in assisting Dulmatin, Warsito and Sibgoh to test three M16 weapons. Third, he is charged with premeditated murder for his role in the first Bali bombing, which killed 192 people. The fourth and fifth charges are related to passport forgery. He used a forged passport to travel to Lahore, Pakistan, under the name of Anis Alawi Jafar, along with his wife Fatimah Zahra.
For the sixth count, Umar Patek has been indicted as a perpetrator of the six church bombings on December 24, 2000.
"Umar Patek has consciously planned to take the lives of other people," the prosecutor pointed out.
Umar Patek is charged with violating articles 266 and 55 of the Criminal Law and Article 1 of the Emergency Law No. 12 of 1951.
After the trial, Umar Patek apologised to the victims of the 2002 Bali bombing and their family members.
"I sincerely apologise. I am full of regret; the act against the law and not true," Umar Patek declared.*
