"Ian Martin, the secretary-general`s special representative for Libya, spoke at an event on Tuesday celebrating women`s participation in the Libyan National Congress," Nesirky said at a daily news briefing here.
Martin said that "the new Libya provides a new opportunity for Libyan women to articulate their political, economic and social aspirations," Nesirky said.
Elections for the Libyan National Congress, which include more than 600 female candidates, are scheduled to be held on July 7. The new congress will have the responsibility of drafting a new constitution for Libya.
Nesirky said that Martin also "commended civil society for its practical efforts to support women to register to vote, to educate women and men about voting, and to help women candidates." (*)
