Surabaya (ANTARA News) - A total of 143 university students from Korea, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia will participate in a three-week Asia Summer Program (ASP) to be held by the Surabaya Petra Christian University (UKP) on July 16-August 3.

"We will carry out lectures consisting of academic studies for two weeks and non-academic activities for another week," chairperson of the ASP 2012 program, Ir Hanny Hosiana Tumbelaka MSc PhD said here on Sunday.

According to her, English is used as an introductory language in the ASP studies related to economic, technical and linguistic matters.

The students during the short study program will also look at the potential of small-and medium-scale businessmen in two markets, namely Pasar Atom and Pasar Wonogiri, she said.

Thus, the students especially the foreign ones will learn bargaining process as part of the Indonesian people`s cultures, Hanny noted.

In addition, they will also look at the creative business potential in Surabaya relating to the batik making.

"They will be taught about the history of batik, batik making techniques, and applied modern batik to the world, such as accessories, body painting, and so forth. They will also learn some typical dance of Surabaya," Hanny disclosed.

Apart from that, the students will also attend the Surabaya special food festival such as locally-known rujak ulek (grind salad), she said, adding they should also write papers at the end of their study to get credit point and certificates from the short studies.

Participants of the Asia Summer Program are 20 students of Dongseo University (Korea), 21 of Universiti Malaysia Perlis-UniMAP (Malaysia), 18 of Josai International University (Japan),

10 of Bangkok University (Thailand), and 74 of UKP Surabaya (Indonesia).
