Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Former central bank senior deputy governor Miranda Goeltom will be sentenced to up to five years of imprisonment if convicted in the bribery case linked to her nomination as a central bank official in 2004.

The prosecution, at the opening of her trial here on Tuesday, said: "Miranda has given travel cheques worth Rp20.85 billion, issued by Bank Internasional Indonesia, as part of a total of 480 travel cheques worth Rp24 billion to state apparatus, namely Hamka Yamdhu, Dudhi Makmun Murod, Endin AJ Soefihara and Udju Djuhaeri, in connection with her election for the post of Bank Indonesia senior deputy governor."

Therefore, Miranda has been accused of violating the corruption law and faces a maximum sentence of five years in jail.

"The defendant is considered to have abused her power by giving an opportunity to Nunung Nurbaeti to extend the gifts in the form travel cheques," the prosecution said.

Nunun Nurbaeti, the wife of a former national police deputy chief, was sentenced to 2.5 years in jail in May after being convicted of the same charges that Miranda is facing now.

Both Miranda and Nunun Nurbaeti were accused of bribing the House of Representatives Commission IX members to ensure Miranda`s election victory in June 2004.(*)
