Jakarta, Aug 27 (ANTARA) - Maritime and Fisheries Minister Sharif Cicip Sutardjo said the country`s GDP from the fishery sector grew faster than GDP from the agricultural sector in the first seven months of the year.

The country`s GDP from the maritime and fishery sector grew 6.75 percent on year as against the growth of 3.42 percent for the agricultural sector, Sharif said here on Monday.

He said exports of maritime and fishery commodities in the first four months of the year grew 25 percent from the same period last year.

Therefore, he expressed optimism that the target for exports of maritime and fishery commodities this year could be reached even could exceed the export target set for this year. He gave no figure for the export target.

Earlier, the ministry set the target for GDP from the maritime and fishery sector at Rp65.84 trillion in 2014.

He said the target could be reached through modernization and industrialization of the sector.

The GDP target grows 6.75 percent from the GDP of Rp50.7 trillion recorded from the sector in 2010.

Shariff said the ministry would continue to seek to boost fishery production and encourage expansion of investment in the sector.

He said the ministry would also seek to develop entrepreneurship in the sector in a bid to improve the welfare of the country`s fishermen.
