The two-day ministerial level meeting, held after a preparatory senior officials meeting on Aug. 26-27, will be followed by the NAM summit on Aug. 30-31.
The ministerial level meeting will study the draft document issued by the senior officials` meeting. The document will be reviewed finally at the summit.
Addressing the opening of the foreign ministers` meeting early Tuesday, Egyptian Deputy Foreign Minister Ramzy Ezz El Din said he hoped that Iran would "succeed" in maintaining the objectives of the organization.
Ezz El Din said that the ongoing NAM meeting is being held under "sensitive" global context. He expressed hope that NAM could play an "effective" role in the face of the current global challenges.
Reforms in the structure of global institutions in a way to meet the interests of all nations has been emphasized by the organization, he said.
Egypt follows specific outlines in the ongoing meeting, which focuses on reforms in the structure of the United Nations through a collective work, nuclear weapons and WMDs (Weapon of Mass Destruction) disarmament, materializing democracy and human rights, fighting international terrorism and helping to resolve the global crises with the Palestinian issue at the core, said Ezz El Din.
Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi is scheduled to partake in the upcoming NAM summit to hand over the rotating NAM presidency to Iran, and the new Egyptian leader is expected to meet some Iranian officials on the sidelines of the event.
Egypt and Iran do not have full diplomatic relations since Iran `s 1979 Islamic Revolution, when Iran cut ties after Cairo gave asylum to the deposed Iranian Shah and made peace with Israel. (AK)
