Gita Wirjawan was named PBSI new general chairman after beating his rival Icuk Sugiarto who is the chief of the Jakarta chapter of PBSI.
Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - The All Indonesia Badminton Association (PBSI) named Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan its new chief for the period of 2012-2016 here on Friday.

"We have elected a new PBSI general chairman and Gita Wirjawan has been elected by acclamation," the chairman of the plenary meeting of the 21st PBSI conference, Koedarto Pramono, said.

Gita Wirjawan was named PBSI new general chairman after beating his rival Icuk Sugiarto who is the chief of the Jakarta chapter of PBSI.

Gita won 31 votes from 33 provincial chapters while Icuk Sugiarto only two from Jakarta and West Nusa Tenggara while one chapter namely from Riau had abstained.

With regard to his election Gita expressed thanks to all participants who had trusted him to lead PBSI for the next four years.

He hoped all PBSI central and regional executive boards would remain united to improve the country`s badminton performance.

PBSI has recently been criticized for failing to contribute a gold medal in the Olympic Games. (*)
