The embassy and other US offices have been closed due to anticipated demonstrations in front of these facilities, according to a Security Message posted on the official website of the US embassy on Friday.
"The American Presence Post in Medan continues to be closed today. We apologize for any inconvenience. We advise, as always, that people should avoid large crowds and other gatherings that might turn violent. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide further updates, if needed," it said.
U.S. citizens living and travelling in Indonesia have been urged to enrol in the Smart Traveller Enrolment Program and update their contact information with the US Embassy in Jakarta, US Consulate General in Surabaya, US Consulate in Medan or the US Consular Agency in Bali.
Enrolling facilitates the US Mission`s contact with US citizens in emergencies and may be done online and in advance of travel.
Last Monday (Sept 17), a rally against "Innocence of Muslims" in front of the US embassy turned chaotic as protesters threw stones, prompting the police to respond with teargas, shotguns and water cannons.
Seven police officers and several demonstrators were injured in the rally. After demonstrating for around three hours, the protesters finally dispersed peacefully.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa recently said that security at various foreign missions, including the US embassy here, has been increased following the emergence of the anti-Islam film. Muslims`.
He said before attending a plenary cabinet meeting last Tuesday that "Efforts have been made to increase security at foreign missions in Jakarta, including the US embassy".
