The ceremony began with a press conference with Mr. Feng Chen and Governor David Paterson on the red carpet before hundreds of media outlets. Mr. Chen accepted the award on behalf of the HNA Group, a company funding and delivering treatment to more than 50,000 patients with cataracts in China, Cambodia, Inner Mongolia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique.
The event kicked-off with a Press Conference followed by a Presidential Cocktail reception where Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon gave remarks before The Honourable Dr. W. Baldwin Spencer, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda; H.E Ambassador Francis Lorenzo, President of South-South News; and Dr. Hamadoun I. Toure, ITU Secretary-General, organizers of the 2012 South-South Awards, greeted VIP guests including honorees: Dr. NC Dlamini Zuma, African Union Chairperson; H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo, Former President of Nigeria, Prime Minister of Lesotho, H.E. Michael Chilufya Sata, President of Zambia, five-time Grammy Award-Winning artist Gilberto Santa Rosa and baseball legend Sammy Sosa among many other high profile guests.
Mr. Feng Chen, Chairman of HNA Group, highlighted the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility at the ceremony. "While pursuing development, we have always been working on giving back to society and take on social responsibilities.
