After leading the Christmas Mass on Wednesday, he stated that the message was inspired by this year's Christmas theme, "Let us go to Bethlehem," taken from Luke 2:15.
"Through this Christmas theme, we wish to convey our hope that Indonesia becomes a 'Bethlehem' of modern times—a place where leaders are born not to be served but to serve wholeheartedly for our nation," the archbishop said at Jakarta Cathedral.
He elaborated on the theme, reminding people that they are created to praise and glorify God. However, he also stressed that this should not overshadow the obligation to perform good deeds for others in pursuit of the common good and justice.
The cardinal outlined five pillars of the social teachings of the Church that should guide individuals in contributing to society.
First is respect for human dignity. He highlighted that issues like human trafficking and online gambling demonstrate the urgent need for further action.
Second is the common good. Suharyo pointed out that the aspiration of independence is to realize "social justice for all the Indonesian people." He urged the government and its apparatus to prioritize the common good by avoiding corruption, bribery, and other unethical practices.
Third is solidarity. He stressed that solidarity requires concrete actions, particularly in addressing persistent issues such as stunting and food waste.
Fourth is attention to the less fortunate. Suharyo emphasized the importance of helping those lacking identity documents or access to education, as many Indonesians still face these challenges.
Fifth is unity of all creation. "Although we are created with unique functions and roles, ultimately, all of these serve to praise and glorify God," he remarked.
"If we understand and live by these five tenets, I believe much of the chaos in our lives will dissipate," he concluded.
