Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka extended Christmas greetings and expressed hope that Christians in Indonesia would celebrate the day with joy and happiness.

"To all Christians in Indonesia, I hope you are celebrating Christmas with your family and loved ones in an atmosphere of joy and happiness," the vice president stated in a video broadcast by his office on Wednesday.

"We hope that peace, safety, and love will always be with us at all times," he remarked.

In addition to delivering his Christmas message, Gibran expressed hope that residents traveling to their hometowns or spending the holidays with family in other cities would have a safe trip.

He also expressed optimism that this year-end holiday would create cherished moments for everyone as they reunite with family.

"Keep healthy, keep safe, and have a safe journey," he said.

Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Budi Gunawan confirmed that Christmas Day celebrations across the country occurred smoothly and safely.

"Security checkpoints at several strategic locations are operating optimally to ensure safety for residents enjoying the holiday," he stated after concluding a tour of public places in Jakarta on Wednesday to observe security conditions.

While the police, military, and local authorities have played their roles in maintaining public order, he also urged residents to contribute to security and order in public places or during travel.

In addition to declaring Christmas Day on December 25 a public holiday, the government designated December 26 as an extra day off to give residents more time to spend the holiday with their families.
