Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA News) - East Java police have shot to death a criminal who used to operate on the street and snatch handbags or purses of women using a sharp weapon, police said.

"We are forced to shot him because when we were trying to arrest him, he resist the arrest and injured police," Adjunct Senior Commissioner Farman, the head of Criminal Investigation Unit of Surabaya Police Headquarters, said here on Sunday.

He said that police had given warning shots before he was shot.

The criminal, his initial was known as Sam (25), a resident Tambak Dalam of Surabaya, was a specialist in handbag snatching belonging to women.

When he was committing his crime, patrolling police were passing by and heard a woman`s scream for help. A number of police soon provide help but the culprit runaway on a motorcycle.

Police tried to stop him but the criminal adversely attacked them with a sword, injuring one of the police. "We are force to shoot him," First Inspector Solikin Ferry, the head of general Crime Unit of the Surabaya Police Headquarters said.
