Rachmad Witoelar stated that Indonesian negotiators 'will leave no stone unturned' in their efforts to extend the protocol.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia will push for the extension of soon-to-expire Kyoto Protocol at the Climate Change Conference, which is scheduled to be held in December in Doha, Qatar.

"The Kyoto Protocol will expire at the end of this year, so we need to extend the protocol through international agreement," Climate Change National Council (DNPI) chairman Rachmad Witoelar said here at an event titled "Youth for Climate Change" on Friday.

He stated that Indonesian negotiators 'will leave no stone unturned' in their efforts to extend the protocol.

"At the Doha conference, if a majority of the countries propose changing the Kyoto Protocol, I hope they will then refer to the Bali Road Map and the Bali Action Plan, which they had agreed to at the Climate Change Conference in Nusa Dua, Bali, in December 2007," Rachmad added.

According to the Bali Road Map, developed countries that have contributed the most to greenhouse gas emissions should be obligated to provide financial assistance to 120 developing countries.

Rachmad expressed hope that there would be no disagreements among the countries over the amount of funds that need to be donated.

"As it is, the United States is already facing the consequences of climate change," he pointed out.

"I hope all parties will agree that US$100 billion in funds is a fair amount," Rachmad said.(*)
